How they contribute to safety, precision, and efficiency

That pharmaceuticals place high demands on their production is hardly surprising. The end-product must be always safe and effective, and waste of precious API 's must be avoided wherever possible.
For example, during production in the pharmaceutical industry, metering pumps are used to dose additives very accurately. These pumps must meet high standards. This is vital to ensure that drug production is safe and effective. Gear pumps are then a logical choice.

Pulsation-free and controlled dosing from 1µl/hour onwards

One of the advantages of gear pumps is their precision, which is very important for the quality of the final product. This is because the amount of liquid pumped can be controlled and adjusted to the specific requirements of a production process. Wasting expensive ingredients is therefore a thing of the past. Moreover, gear pumps are characterised by continuous, pulsation-free dosing and low shear stress. Two more important contributions to your quality!

Reliable and long service life

As gear pumps are configured specifically for the application, they are highly reliable and durable. The high-quality and possibly polished (Ra < 0.8) materials are resistant to corrosion and wear. This makes them suitable for use in demanding environments, such as clean rooms.

         Safety

Hygienic gear pump

SIP gear pump, hygienic class H3. Sterilisation with steam up to 135°C.

Due to the chemical character of additives, it is often necessary for pumps to be leak-proof. Magnetically coupled gear pumps are hermetically sealed. The shaft seals have given way to a magnetic bushing with static seals that hermetically seal the pump. This way, no leakage can occur!

GMP-directives

To meet the GMP guidelines to which pharma must conform, gear pumps are available that are either SIP- or CIP-cleanable. Designed to meet the highest hygiene and quality requirements, they can be thoroughly cleaned without dismantling.

To produce homogenous, consistent micro pellets ≥ 0.3 mm

Suurmond have added a new product range to their portfolio for the food and pharma industries; the MAAG PFS series for hot-melt extrusion and micro pelletizing. With the advanced technologies by MAAG, a new era has begun when it comes to making high quality solid dosage forms for pharmaceutical and food applications.

MAAG’s technologies produce homogenous, consistent micro pellet sizes, ensure continuous manufacturing in simplified processes, avoids the creation of dust during the process and require no grinding! The complete PFS range complies with pharma and food directives!

The use of micro pellets

Pellets are neither powder nor granules; they are characterized by a defined shape and a very narrow particle size distribution. This allows a very wide range of applications that integrate active substances such as tableting, and capsule filling in the pharmaceutical industry, and sweetener and gum base in the food industry. Since no grinding is used in the process, the structure and the effectiveness of active substances remain unaffected.

The PFS range consist of:

Process equipment for highest quality micro pellets

HME and micro pelletizing process

Hot-melt extrusion

Hot-melt extrusion (HME) has been revealed as a successful technology for a large spectrum of applications in the pharmaceutical industry, with proven robustness for numerous drug delivery systems. With HME, even the processing of poorly soluble carrier/active substance combinations, no longer poses a major problem in the pharmaceutical industry.

Some of the most well-known applications are for taste-masking of drugs, solubility enhancement of poorly water-soluble compounds, controlled, extended, sustained and targeted drug delivery.

The MAAG extrex® PFS gear pumps are specially designed for applications in the pharmaceutical industries. Such applications require specific design characteristics: high discharge pressure capability, constant throughput, gentle conveying, and narrow temperature ranges. In such an environment, the proven extrex® gear pumps unfold their full potential.

Micro pelletizing

MAAG offer different types of micro pelletizers, meeting precisely the demands of the pharmaceutical industry with its specially developed pelletizing systems. The innovative pelletizing technology results in particles of uniform shape and size for optimal direct further processing.

The various types of pelletizing systems are all dedicated to a certain type of formulation or process such as:

New MAAG industrial gear pumps for precise dosing and conveyance. For industrial applications the processed medias vary widely from corrosive and abrasive media, to applications with high (differential) pressures, high viscosities, and high temperatures. With the new MAAG innovations, pump types dosixTM and flexinoxTM , Suurmond further extends her portfolio and can herewith satisfy the demand for precise dosing and conveying units even better for a wide range of diversified media.

Due to the chemical properties of the conveyed media, the quality requirements for industrial applications are very stringent and diversified. Thanks to their chemical resistance the MAAG dosixTM and MAAG flexinoxTM gear pumps are used for different chemicals involving highly pure, corrosive, viscous or very hot media, e.g. acids, solvents, molten sulphur, and flavours or fragrances but also for food and pharma processes.

The housing cover of both MAAG dosixTM and MAAG flexinoxTM consists of a three-piece configuration that facilitates maintenance and the replacement of internal parts, i.e. gears and bearings.

MAAG dosixTM – the new dosing pump

dosing pump

MAAG dosing pump type dosix with a 3-piece design for easy maintenance

The MAAG dosixTM is corrosion resistant and electrically heatable especially designed for small throughputs. The superior dosing precision of the pump makes it an ideal solution for applications such as flavours and fragrances that require the accurate dosing of low viscosity scent and aroma components. The new dosixTM is available in five different sizes.

MAAG flexinoxTM – the new conveying pump

The MAAG flexinoxTM gear pumps are also corrosion resistant and can be heated, either electrically or by fluid. The flow rates are higher compared to the dosixTM and the application range is extended to resins and various plastics, e.g. precursors of carbon fibres. The new MAAG flexinoxTM is available in four different sizes.

To enable a varied range of process fluids and flow rates, the seal flange can accommodate different pump sizes!
