What is cavitation ?

Cavitation occurs at poor filling of the pump. When the flow to the pump is not great enough, the "NPSH available" will be lower than the "NPSH required".

The cavitation reveals a metallic noise from the pump.

Possible causes are:

  • A too high engine speed
  • A too short suction pipe
  • Too much resistance in the suction pipe
  • A too high vapour pressure
  • A too low pressure in the flow vessel

Due to these causes, the flow will be insufficient to fill the pump and vapour bubbles will come in to the pump at the suction side. These vapour bubbles will be compressed and implode at the outlet side. Those implosions will damage parts of the pump. This will finally damage the pump in such a way that it loses its function.
